    In 1913, the Cubist painter André Lhote produced a number of Cubist works depicting scenes from everyday life with several characters. These include the small oil painting Les Fortifs and the charming ink drawing La Lecture au Jardin. In the latter, three figures and a cat are quietly relaxing outdoors. The male figure in the foreground could be the artist himself, who liked to wear a moustache, as the photograph taken of him in 1925 attests.
